SOUND NEWS VOLUME II - NOVEMBER 1994 - SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT

COMMENTARY, CATALOG AND NEW CD RELEASES...................................................

THE LIVING NIGHTMARE OF RECORD DISTRIBUTION

With this edition of Sound News, SOUTHPORT records is please to announce our new distribution situation with

HITS UNLIMITED , a veteran Chicago based "real" distribution company that actually listens to jazz and new music.

The president of HITS is Les Reid. In the past Les has worked with the "major" labels when they actually produced

jazz records (sometime B.C.)...he saw a need for independent label distribution and formed his company.

Over the last 15 years SOUTHPORT has serviced many living and dead record stores direct, via a boy scout term

called consignment. That means that you present the product at no cost direct to the stores and return later and try

to collect the money, that is if the store is still there. Selling jazz can be like selling the flu, people got it but no one

wants it. In a country where artists like Betty Carter and Yusef Lateef had to create, record and sell their own art you can imagine how hard it is to sell new music in Chicago.

One way the consumer can help the independent label is to request the records you want at the point of purchase. The next time you go in one of those giant stores like BEST BUY and they have 30,000 records from around the

world, but not the new SOUTHPORT release from around the corner- complain! Large chain corporations are run by people that look and act like Oliver North and even Nancy Reagan doesn't trust him, or the people of Virginia. So

fellow SOUTHPORT champions the next time you by a 9000 inch color TV, pick up a David Flippo CD at Best Buy,

in fact, chant in the numbered check out lanes- FLIPPO! FLIPPO! BEST BUY! BEST BUY!

NOVEMBER NEW RELEASE: FRANK PORTOLESE "TRANSPARENT" (S-SSD 0025)

This newsletter will hit the street at the Frank Portolese CD release party at The Chambers, restaurant and music room. Many of the songs that are on the recording you can experience before you purchase the CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frank recorded this CD at Sparrow Sound Design, our sister recording studio. The style of recording was LIVE,

no overdubs or digital corrections...like hearing Frank LIVE. The guitar has been a part of jazz since its inception and the tradition of jazz players continues with this CD.

Frank's trio consists of Rusty Jones on drums and Brian

Sandstrom on acoustic bass. (Get the band to sign your CD.)

The modern jazz performer and composer draw musical sounds

from many sources- latin, pop, blues and modern, the blending

of these styles becomes the essence of the new sound. The

beauty of jazz lies in the fact that it transcends all forms of music...

it exists without restrictions and without physical cages...it is a

mirror of the culture and the society, and most of all - ageless.

SOUND NEWS VOLUME III - DECEMBER 1994 SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT

COMMENTARY, CATALOG AND NEW RELEASE INFORMATION.......................

WHAT THE PUBLIC WANTS THE PUBLIC GETS? by B.P.Sparrow

The contemporary music post hip hop craze about various female body parts seems to be the largest selling CD

at most stores. On music televsion we see hordes of bodies dancing around angry beer drinking men with that

loud bass kick drum beat that falls from car windows on the streets of Chicago and any town or city. Distorted

guitars plead the latest alternative rock theme, as bands are plucked right out of high school with a LOOK, a STANCE, but no life reason. Ms. Crow just wants to have fun on some street set. Nirvana is back from the dead

with MTV acoustic toss outs...they steam into number ONE. Classical singers try to sing old show songs with

exotic dresses on. Prince has no name but songs with names. Veruka Salt has a 1.5 million $$ deal. Spin does not

like Liz Phair and the Smashing Pumpkins toss out out takes and old songs for a "quickie record." Bud Powell returns with not one but TWO box sets within the same week. Is this what the public wants?

For years artists-musicians have tried to convince both record labels and radio stations to try a new sound. Most large corporations have a sealed "crypt" type of mentality. Money is the bottom line. Why should record buyers

stock obscure SOUTHPORT records, when the latested BOOTYBOP CD ships 500,000 units. No one said

that money came complete with conscience. If everyone from consumers to district buyers made an effort to

purchase CD's that were made within their "village" or region it would help. Within the county of COOK, the

state of Illinois, there are over 5 million people. It seems that we could sell 5000 CD's without degrading women or

the music traditions of all people. So shop SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT at your neighborhood store. We don't

want to just do mail order, sitting in some dark room within the state of Utah. Buying records is a social-personal

experience and you can meet people!

DECEMBER NEW RELEASE: DAMON SHORT "ALL OF THE ABOVE" (S-SSD-0028)

With the wealth of new music in Chicago, ten record labels

could release 20 CD's each day, but this is not New York and

we are not Howard Hughes...(by the way Hughes favorite

movie was "Ice Station Zebra"...?). Drummer-composer

Damon Short has been on the Midwestern jazz scene for

several years. His new ensemble creation, "All of The Above"

is a continuation in the mid-size group epic- with vivid colors

that span many forms of music. Melodies flash with changing

colors as the ensemble lifts like an Orchestra. Paul Smoker,

Paul Scea, Jim Yanda, Ryan Shultz, Larry Kohut and Jeff

Newell are the players on this disc.

SOUND NEWS VOLUME IV - JANUARY/FEBRUARY 1995 SOUTHPORT/

NORTHPORT COMMENTARY, CATALOG AND NEW RELEASE INFORMATION

THE NEW CONSERVATIVE RIGHT IN MUSIC by B. P. Sparrow

Music is the constant mirror to our culture. As we watch the new political conservative in politics in this country move backwards into isolation and the protection of "republican values", music moves with it. Many hold the 60's as a decade of dreams and reform. The late creations of John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy offering albums that at times had but two 23 minute tracks, seem but a powerful memory. Today modern "jazz" artists dress in dark Ralph Nadar like suits with thin ties and white hankies. With the support of major labels they claim to hold the "historic secrets" of jazz within the attitude of their youth. The methods of free concepts with the older forms of jazz giants become the "rules of the road" for the new, and lost is the boldness of fresh creation. They merely recycle someone elses dreams, not having the inner strength to create. A form called jazz becomes a standard size of shoe. Lost is the youthful excitement and the abiltity to stimulate.

Despite these neo-conservative trends, the world of music is exploding. Jazz, latin, rock and new music artists are crossing and blendng forms. The modern listener has a world of music to draw from and today's artist is creating a new found sense of art and creativity. 1995 is rushing toward a new century, and all will change...the artist, the culture and the modern audience.

JANUARY NEW RELEASE: PAULINHO GARCIA "JAZZMINEIRO" (S-SSD 0026)

Composer, guitarist and vocalist Paulinho Garcia joins

SOUTHPORT with "Jazzmineiro". Born in Brazil, Paulinho

blends the music of his youth with the urban essence

of American jazz forms. The duality of his view creates

music with a new passion. The Jazzmineiro ensemble will perform

live as we celebrate the release of this long awaited CD.

COMMENTARY, CATALOG AND NEW RELEASE INFORMATION............

BIRTH OF THE MEDIA HYPE- A STAR IS BORN by B. P. Sparrow 12

March feels like the beginning. The cold of winter melts away. Birds return. People are active again. Behind closed doors songs are being written. Record companies are regrouping. When you page through various magazines the same names appear from the same record labels. These are the BUZZ people. Their art and their careers have an extra PUSH. We are told over and over again that they are great...the YOUNG lions or the new SOUND...we begin to elevate these media BUZZ people into a position of greatness, the way KLEENEX becomes the term for tissue or XEROX becomes the term for copier. The problem is when you write about a person in print you don't really HEAR THEM. Many of the public relations people don't have a common understanding of music, or sound. They simply SELL. If an artist is shy or introverted, their work and creations can remain a secret. If the artist has a fear of the great information highway, they will continue to exist within the quiet of the side roads, the alley in isolation-removed from the spectacle. It can be said that the greatest "art" exists seperately from the society, like a lost animal or dream.

Within the classic film "A Star Is Born", James Mason is married to rising star Judy Garland. His career is fading and she is reaching a new level. He tries to cope and support her, but his memory of fame and time create a binding obstacle between them. At an Oscar ceremony, in desperation, he gets drunk. The ego and the fame destroy their relationship. Likewise within music and jazz those who receive the cover stories, the fame, the elevation, become removed from so many that also create. Greatness is not a child of the media. It is the product of the media hype,

the push. The only true judge is the reaction of the individual listener, for the audience is an intricate part of the creation process. All else is merely HARD COPY.

MARCH NEW RELEASE: GEORGE FREEMAN "REBELLION" (S-SSD 0027)

SOUTHPORT has been around since the ancient days of black

vinyl. The first LP, Sparrow - "Latin Black" remains active in the

catalog. When label partner Joanie Pallatto had a conversation

with Von Freeman at the now closed Hi Hat Club, they kept all

notes on a cocktail napkin and this became the contract and the

production sheet for "Walkin' Tuff!", Von's first CD. "Rebellion"

marks the debut of guitarist George Freeman for SOUTHPORT.

The Direct to Digital recording session was completed in

one afternoon, and features George Freeman on guitar, Von

Freeman on piano (rather than the instrument that made him world

famous, the tenor sax), Penny Pendelton on acoustic bass (his last

recording date before he passed away), and Mike Raynor on drums.

SOUND NEWS VOLUME VI - APRIL 1995 SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT COMMENTARY, CATALOG AND NEW RELEASE INFORMATION..............

THE POETRY OF MUSIC-RECORD STORE-GROCERY STORE by B.P. Sparrow

We all shop for groceries at our favorite neighborhood store. Just when you visualize and memorize the exact location of the eggs-milk-dog food-vegetable boullion cubes- the grocer changes things around. This makes all types of the so called 'organized' shopper angry. It seems that the powers to be don't want the steady shopper to become overtly organized. They want to lure you into the concept of buying something new by mixing up the common placement- an old trick, an odd trick that aggravates but works. When a piece of music is composed the record label or the publisher likes to place it in some neat location. Is it classical (fresh fish), hip-hop (produce), romantic with the verve of YANNI (soap opera magazines). All music must have its location, its scientific phylum.

It is suggested that the publisher or the record label change the location of all the "musical items". Why must we listen only to the milk, or the eggs, or the romaine lettuce? Is Cecil Taylor jazz or classical, fish or fowl? Is Stravinsky spaghetti or fettucini? (Modern or early/late romantic sharp cheddar). What is new age? Always new. Is alternative rock simply Grand Funk Railroad with torn jeans and musical corporate ignorance? Why is Duke Ellington left out of the "Classical" section, is there any Aaron Copeland in jazz- is Jobim jazz or Brazilian or merely South American? Is Cuban music South American or North Australian? Is minimalism like low fat yogurt? What are country and western sounds- a Tex-Mex salad dressing? Past all the names, the prices and the endless stacks of CD's, we only have the music. The poetry of sound. Or how about simply thinking- I LIKE IT, whatever its english name is, or its fat and calorie content.

SOUTHPORT project. The ensemble features Brian Gephart, co-

Design engineer Joanie Pallatto, and assisted by Dave's long time producer

with its roots in jazz, blues, bop and funk. Please join the Dave Gordon

SOUND NEWS VOLUME VII-MAY/JUNE SOUTHPORT-NORTHPORT

COMMENTARY, CATALOG AND NEW RELEASE INFORMATION................

UNIT FOUR AND THE SUMMER OF 1979 by B. P. Sparrow

While driving a checker cab in the summer of 1979 thoughts of African and Latin music raced in my head. Mixing a variety of jobs, cab-piano moving-construction, I had bought a new 4-track tape recorder. Converting an old coach house just north of Cabrini Green by pushing an ancient pickup truck into the alley through the aluminum garage door opening and bricking it up, finding used carpet and padding for the walls and floor, lifting the front glass from an old Zenith console TV for the corner control room glass and opening the side gangway door between takes for fresh air-we were in business!

Sparrow - "Latin Black" (SSD 0001), the first true SOUTHPORT, or Sparrow Sound Design release came out in 1980 on black vinyl as an LP. There was no marketing budget or people to work the radio. There was no media plan or lush stretch limo, just the voices of a group of musicians that wanted to make a statement, like in the movies- to leave something behind. The nickname for our new garage studio was, alas- THE PIT, and in order to use the restroom one navigated up a ladder thru a hole in the floor that took you upstairs into the hall closet!

In 1981 singer Joanie Pallatto became my partner and we upgraded to 8-track with a new mixing board. Driving back from Cicero we put the giant Tascam on the bed of my 1969 Chevy pickup truck and purchased some more (new) carpet on Archer Ave. along the way home. I spent about 10 hours trying to get a "sound" from the bulky board and in frustration called back to the store for help...they said "We only sell these things, we don't use them." In 1982 we had to move the studio and we did- to SOUTHPORT. It is now 1995. Sparrow Sound Design recording studio and SOUTHPORT Records has produced 34 projects- ALL by people from this region of the world. 15 years and 34 projects has to be some kind of Chicago, post soybean 'record'. We no longer have to open the side door of the studio for fresh air, but SOUTHPORT, and Sparrow Sound Design are still run by and for Chicago musicians. In this strip mall chain store I don't give a damn Bob Dole world-- WE ARE STILL HERE.

COMING HOME, OR, THERE IS MUSIC ALL AROUND ME by B. P. Sparrow

Chicago is the place. The blistering heat of summer and all those music festivals... Blues-jazz-latin-space- all vital living forms of music. Chicago is alive. Since it is 105 degrees today, let's go out to the record store where it is COOL. We visit TOWER and see Jim De Jong with his cart placing the new releases in their bin... man, he is running out of room, but alas there is a Chicago Jazz section that's cross-indexed..AMAZING! You know you have all the Miles Davis CD's- why not buy a CHICAGO CD! There's Okka Disc, Delmark, Premonition, Quinnah, Copia, ....come on now! (Don't forget SOUTHPORT!) The store is amazing, like a library of world sound...go ahead spend all your money- ok, you can save 10 dollars and buy a giant burrito at El Jardin and one of those killer MARGARITAS- say hey to CHE!

In our haste to purchase the music of the world we often forget that Chicago is part of the world. Many CHAIN stores let the great computer tell them what to purchase, not the public. That is why you might find music from some other country but not music from your city and your musician friends. Tell your favorite store what you want and they will order it, if not find a "music friendly store" like TOWER, THE JAZZ RECORD MART, THE INSIDE TRACK, BORDERS, ROSE RECORDS (Ashland or Wabash), CROW'S NEST, MUSICLAND (Schaumburg), ROCK RECORDS, THE HOUSE OF MUSIC and THE B SIDE. Without the stores we don't exist and it is also a great place to "meet people" and find NEW MUSIC.

COMMENTARY, CATALOG AND NEW RELEASE INFORMATION 1995.......

AMERICA OVERSAMPLED OR PUMPKINS WITHIN PUMPKIN SEASON by b.p. sparrow

In the corner of a record store today I saw a pumpkin exhibit. If you read all the trades, Billboard and etc. you have to know that the SMASHING PUMPKINS have a new 2-CD set. Now all the jazz and new music cats don't realize that these PUMPKIN PEOPLE have sold over 4 million CDs (can you imagine that truck in front of your house?) It is time that Chicago jazz cats kept up with what the "other" generation wants to hear. Me, I heard "The Shadows Of Night" g..l..o..r..i..a and saw Keith Emerson throwing hunting knifes into his HAMMOND B-3. Do you think that the record BOSS PEOPLE thought that it would be a great idea to have the PUMPKIN CD come out within HALLOWEEN time? (Burgers, keyrings-O. J> things???). And the new Eddie Murphy movie is a Dracula movie and it opens for HALLOWEEN. LIKE, who puts all those bar ghouls and OSCO decorations up?

AMERICA invented the concept of the CIRCUS. THE HYPE. If we could we would sell, sell, and then sell it again. We would. Those rows of anxious CDs...WHO ARE ALL THOSE BANDS? The best thing to do is to trust your own ears, your feelings about the music, the sound. BE OPEN. And we all wish that Clint Eastwood would have discovered Johnny Hartman 30 years ago... ("Madison County" -Billboard #6 10-3-95).

KEVIN GAINER, PIANO CHICAGO__________________________________

With all the things that we do in life we think that we will live forever. The petty problems. The bills. The time that we don't give to people that we care about and the time that we give to those who don't deserve it. Kevin was the type of cat who came to the recording session an hour early. His energy was a gift that many people never see.

He would grab the piano, like a large body of water, or an anxious pet dog and harness it..a true descendant of McCoy Tyner, or those other double barrelled shotgun piano players. Kevin died a couple of months ago. But the sound never dies, it is there, like poem or person, or your grandparents piano...

SOUND NEWS VOLUME X: DECEMBER - SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT COMMENTARY, CATALOG AND NEW RELEASE INFORMATION 1995.....

BENEATH THE INFORMATION HIGHWAY by b. p. sparrow

The internet. CD Rom. The Digital Dish. The CD. We are in a virtual maze of information mediums, they spin around our heads like summer locust. We stare into the open face of computers, for work, for fun, for romance.

Tiny bug like bits of digital data wait for us to awake in the morning, our minds linked to constant lists of things to do, people to communicate with...digital domains to explore and decorate. When does it stop? Millions of CD's line the record stoes like tiny rows of toy soldiers. Many of the aritsts have faded into obscurity or passed into a new dimension, but alas their graphics and colors and music shine anew. The remaining Beatles overdub on a song from John Lennon, ABC TV does the mega tie-in. Ringo Starr smiles, reborn, and looks into the camera again. George Harrison needs to make payments on his English castle, Paul McCartny always looks the same...Perhaps it is time to deal with the present. The original. The people who live in your neighborhood, the Von Freeman's, the Bobby Lewis's, the Corky McClerkin's. The internet says, "Shop at home this Christmas, buy SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT CD'S, they are rare, like tiny Chicago jewels, or candles...and the artists live right here...for Christmas?"

RON SURACE "THE NEW COOL" (S-SSD 0037)

ATTACK OF THE KILLER 50 FOOT LABEL by b.p. sparrow

When a "major" label releases a new CD it is like the birth of a new breakfast cereal. Before "we" the general public can judge for ourselves the artistic and musical worth of the release the media sector is flooded with reviews, full page ads, Hollywood cocktail parties and beefed-up hype. Massive chains and stores put in their advance orders, the TV and radio begin to play a cut, have interviews, and like anxious children we are led to the launching ramp of ultra-slick this is IN MY BRAIN I MUST BUY IT. Not much to do with music, kind of like hearing about Whitewater, over and over again.

Some of the most creative music in the world has come from the honest independent fringe. The backbone of America is the essence of the small business. In fact there are more small business operations in this country than large ones- Ma and Pa independent labels that trust in the music, the souls of the artists and the integrity of the sound. Good media can not perfect the art. Individuals make their own social and musical decisions. Listen to the music of the small man and woman for they are the ones with THE BIG EARS!!!!

COMMENTARY, CATALOG AND NEW RELEASE INFORMATION...........................

THE AIR AROUND OUR HEADS OR RADIO CONTROL by b. p. sparrow

"When president Clinton signs the new Telecommunications Act of 1996 this week, he'll be helping Chicago's radio rich get richer". This is a quote from the great Robert Feder's radio column in last month's Chicago Sun-Times. "As a result, Evergreen, CBS and Infinity own 11 of Chicago's top 20 stations...together the three companies control 42% of Arbitron's audience shares and a staggering 53.9% of the $311 million in total advertising revenue generated by Chicago radio stations in 1995."

Radio is the original open internet. It moves around our heads as its waves bring news. People can not drive a car and watch TV, or scroll via computer around the world. With the birth of TV many thought that radio would die, but it has grown. Instead of ma and pa stations that service the communities across the land, the radio has been eaten up by corporate machines that put a tight leash on not only announcers, but also program

directors. Major record labels with proper funding can "tell you" what hit you will enjoy. They can "place" funds via vicarious means and put the bullet in the gun of the "#1 hit with a bullet." That is why many of us can only listen, quoting Mike DelValle, to WBBM News Radio 78!...that is talk. The pop and rock and hip hop artists seem to be corporate creations that have nothing to do with our musical or social culture, like "WHO REALLY USES TIDY BOWL BLUE?"

We can fight back. Call your local stations when you want to hear a record that you like. They can not exist without you. Help the bands of new musicians live and exist by supporting the radio in this region of 8 MILLION PEOPLE. That is how bands like Charlie Parker, The Box Tops, Chicago, Styx and Ministry started!

LINDA TATE "WE BELONG TOGETHER" S-SSD 0038

Vocalist Linda Tate debuts for SOUTHPORT-- a mesmerizing new voice

on the jazz scene. The variety of material included on this new CD speaks

to a love of jazz music in many forms! With arrangements by pianist Bradley

Williams , including swinging standards "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home

To" to tasteful renditions of Stevie Wonder's "Ribbon In The Sky" and

Brazilian composer Milton Nascimento's "Bridges" featuring the guitar and

percussion duo of Dave Onderdonk & Mark Walker, "Mystic Dreams", an

original with music by Sparrow and lyrics by Linda Tate, to new compositions

including the title cut, "We Belong Together" by Dianne Reeves & Diane Louie--

this CD covers it all with a cohesion that is the earthy soul of Linda Tate.

LOST IN A SEA OF COMPACT DISCS by b. p. sparrow

The Sears on 79th Street just past the grand skyway entrance on Stoney Island was a marvel back in the '50s.

The cream yellow brick structure had everything. Cool craftsman tools. A GIANT toy department. And the best thing of all was the centrally located popcorn-candy-and nuts stand. In fact the entire store smelled of lush, rich Sears POPCORN. Years later some Sears executive (perhaps the same one that tried to sell Sears Tower) got rid of the popcorn stand thinking that the idea was dated. Both children of the now (and me) cried. The popcorn returned and all was like the 1950's.

Like those corn candy things in a wide clear glass bin CDs have taken over the world. The 75,000 foot Virgin Music Mega-Store will open in Times Square on April 23rd with 1 million CDs, now that is alot of Neil Young! So many sounds, so many flavors, so many titles. A petite outfit like SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT has to fight for the ever moving shelf space...ALL OF THOSE MILES DAVIS REISSUES! When you see our CDs in the store..THANK THE STORE (and then proceed to buy out all of them!) With the essence of modern duplication artists can create and compete with the BIG TUNA labels. SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT represents the music of the LIVING. Men and Women that live in your neighborhood exist in a common reality. And perhaps some marketing genius will bring some fresh popcorn to your local store! (or orange-yellow candy corn-- for the teeth!!)

COMMENTARY, CATALOG AND NEW RELEASE INFORMATION.............

WHEN THE SOUND OF MUSIC IS NOT ENOUGH by b. p. sparrow

A member of the soft metal band Ministry pleaded guilty to heroin possession and made the cover of PULSE magazine the next month. Milli Vanilli's Robert Pilatus was ordered to spend 90 days in jail for 3 violent attacks.

Nicoletta Mantavani 26, the secretary to Luciano Pavarotti was seen kissing the famed tenor (no wife in site) and walking arm-in-arm during a vacation. With the bit stream of musical information, these are the main music news items. You see, the sound of music has yellowed, like print and TV journalism, and music is "not enough".

Sure, with this year's jazz festival Bill Kurtis and News at 6 will cut away to the 1996 Fest and project some stock footage of some national act, for 2 or 3 seconds. But with the endless reported fires and murders, art and music falls to the back of the bit arena. You see, the Richard Speck murder tapes bring listeners, and the multiple shots of Pamela Anderson cause more sparks than the soulful sound of jazz or classical, blues or latin masters. Chicago music news is non-news, unpolluted and unfulfilled. As artists

create they live in the shadow of "yellowed" journalism and die, without mention or critique. Perhaps in the next life Richard Speck will play the bass and Pamela Anderson will sing bebop in clothes, Ministy will be a Brazilian band, Pavarotti an ace tenor man with Bill Kurtis in the corner on percussion. Then and only then will music be enough for news.

CHICAGO, THE CENTER OF THE DIAL ~ RADIO USA by b. p. sparrow

Long long ago when TV was invented many predicted the death of RADIO. Well, as we reach the vortex of the next millenium that HAS NOT HAPPENED! In fact, as throngs of modern working commuters commute, the radio is alive and well, boasting billions of dollars of ad income and multiple forms of SOUND. Each market has its shock jock, dragging the brains of supporters along for warped rides-- and we all love WBBM NEWS Radio 78 with "traffic on the 8's" and young Bob Strube with his fresh produce market tips. For the new music listener, our Chicago labels, SOUTHPORT and NORTHPORT are served on many levels with several options.

WBEZ-FM has been playing our CDs since the summer of 1979. Chris Heim, Dick Buckley, Neil Tesser, Larry Smith, Aaron Freeman and Richard Steele are strong supporters of the NEW. WDCB, Public Radio from College of DuPage boasts daily JAZZ from 6 in the morning with Erv Jezek, Bruce Oscar, Abbe Glassman, Dave Freeman, Bob Foskett and Marshall Vente. Jim Zanghi, John Corbett, Nicole Demitriou, Seth Tisue & the folks at WNUR blaze bold new horizions with innovative new music programming. WRRG's Tom Macek is a real jazz supporter, along with WHPK's Susan Dodge, Rodolfo Sanchez, Lou Stern & Alex Glusman. WNUA specialty shows give an important presence, with Scott Adams "Sounds of Brazil" and weekly shows from veteran jazz master Ramsey Lewis & Mark Ruffin. AM jazz is represented by WBEE's Davita, Carl Farley & ace host Bill King. WXRT IS JAZZ Sunday nights with Barry Winograd, & on the rock/new music front, Richard Milne. WCBR is strong with DJ Greg Easterling & Sarra Gallager's Chicago Songwriters Show. WFMT with The Midnight Special and the legendary Studs Terkel have presented countless artists. WNIB adds the music of new composers to its classical rotation from Ron Ray, and late night jazz with Al Hudgins. So turn on the TV, turn off the sound and LISTEN TO THE RADIO.

FLOWERS THAT WE TAKE FOR GRANTED, SOFTLY ~ by b. p. sparrow

In the dark red yellow shadow of some dim Chicago bar the pianist plays the worn piano. The ivory keys bent and torn, tearing at his or her fingers. Patrons play the instrument of constant conversation and ignore the music. It is just another night, another half light day in the autumn of this life. This musician, union for 60 years awaits the given death benefits of $2,000 and a mention in the Intermezzo, but he or she will not make the Chicago Tribune, or the Sun-Times obit column (unless someone pays), much less the New York Times arts section.

It is an old story. The media, especially television ignores the musician, as if the artist's work mission is life on a placid moon colony caught in the rude rapture of outer space. Sure, in college books it looks hip to be the product of society and to suffer, without insurance or income, without wage increase or respect. To beg like some lost dream for a simple mention of an engagement or the REVIEW of some CD. But until both the media and the audience realize the wealth of lost art that hovers within the atmosphere called CHICAGO, until we give respect to the artist, the artist will suffer in the web of obscurity. Unless both the artist and the audience writes and begs the media for review, we will continue to ONLY read about Demi Moore of plastic fame and how the alternative rock rich can afford exotic drugs to ease the pain of their mediocrity. GIVE THE PIANO PLAYER A DOLLAR.

"KING! THE KING FLEMING SONGBOOK" (S-SSD 0041)

Christmas song. Please join us at Pops for Champagne for a

SOUTHPORT COMMENTARY, CATALOG & NEW RELEASE INFO..........................

CHICAGO, CHICAGO, MY KIND OF TOWN~ by b. p. sparrow

The Chicago Cubs. The Chicago Bulls. The Chicago Bears. The Chicago Blackhawks. Each night the local TV stations give us the scores. Can you imagine if they had the common imagination to tell you about a live rock band at PHYLISS', or a jazz set at THE BOP SHOP or some NEW MUSIC at THE LUNAR CABARET? But, night after night, only the inside information on just what the multimillion dollar sports figure has done. It seems that part of Pearl Jam (Eddie Vedder) likes Dennis Rodman, so that makes both of them cool within their fancy cars. Also each night on local TV you hear about bad things, locally. There is no reason to repeat those sad stories, someone hurt in a store, or on an expressway. Where is the local TV art coverage? It's not on Channel 11, they moved to the island of Great Britian several years ago. It is not at Channel 2, they stoped all ART coverage after they let Bob Wallace go. It's not on FOX-32, for that "AMY" person went to MTV to deal with those east coast big money people (she only interviewed herself over and over again anyway). Where is the GOOD news, about CHICAGO music, film, dance? IT DOES NOT EXIST ON TV!!! There is no blood in common art. It is considered "soft" news. Don't TV people ever go out and experience art, or do they exist in a VACUUM of nothing? ARE WE NOT WORTHY? Do people who work on CHICAGO TV live in CHICAGO? (or ROME).

Chicago music/art and TV need each other. You might read, but most people don't. Why do we have to hear more about new music on CNN? Tell the people at Channel 11 that you want to HEAR ABOUT THIS COMMUNITY OF MUSICIANS AND ARTISTS! Show more films by Chicago Film artists while you're at it. (Woodstock on Channel 11 this week?). Show Von Freeman, Oscar Brown Jr. or John Prine on Channel 11. (Yanni on Channel 11?). ARE WE NOT WORTHY???

concert by JAMES YELLOWBANK AND FRIENDS- located at 78 East

Washington, just off of Michigan Ave. 312-744-6630.

ANDREW LIDGUS "HEART & SOUL" (NPT-2001)

NORTHPORT records presents the world wide CD release of pianist-

SOUND NEWS VOLUME XVIII DECEMBER 1996 SOUTHPORT/

NORTHPORT COMMENTARY, CATALOG AND YEAR END INFO...

WHEN EMOTIONS BECOME DIGITAL~by b.p. sparrow

I have grown used to the the color of snow and quartz Chicago lights, past the thin splash of 10-W40 oil and the sound of music from Lange's corner bar, another year, another digital tear. Music plays in my head like a human radio and I feel laughter chase all the sorrow and noise from the world. People, like animals are friendly and all the talk is like symphonic sounds. A feeling of the new, the complete. The coffee is hot and the music is ripe like a mexican beach, or Rainbow beach in August, past the train tracks.

Good music has become popular again. and all the mundane systems are lost in a digital mist that moves away in another direction. People listen. People talk, in a natural analog way, and you don't have to tell someone that this music is good and true. You don't have to beg for an audience. We are all treated "Wayne Newton" like in a Very Vegas manner, a good party. A good Sound.

We all have parties this season that we can't to go to. We like the people and have fun. No one is playing Kenny G, or John Coltrane, they are playing LIVE music and singing. It is a new holiday on the rim of a new century.

ALL OF US AT SOUTHPORT AND NORTHPORT wish you all PERFECT HOLIDAYS and fine music. We thank you for the profound support and look to more NEW music in the future! This December issue of SOUND NEWS will only be on our WEB page, so it is a "digital emotion" and a BIG thanks to our WEB MAN Pete Jacobs for pulling us on line into the 21st Century. Me, I still have my 8-track in my '79 El Camino!

ON THE HORIZON FOR A BUSY 1997!!!!!!!!!

Before the end of the year we will see you at THE LUNAR CABARET AND FULL MOON CAFE , for a concert of new music by Sparrow, Tatsu Aoki and Joanie Pallatto called "IN SEARCH OF RA". The date is Friday, December 27 at 10PM!

Also in 1997: THE MARSHALL VENTE JAZZ FESTIVAL returns to the new JOE SEGAL'S JAZZ SHOWCASE, JANUARY 23-26TH.

The Sparrow Trio with Tatsu Aoki & Dave Pavkovic, and special guest Joanie Pallatto will perform Saturday, Jan. 25th. SUPPORT LIVE JAZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CD'S ON THE HORIZON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Composer, guitarist and arranger Paulinho Garcia has just completed a new SOLO CD for a winter carnival time release. Composer, guitarist and arranger Tomas de Utrera will release a CD of live historic tracks from his life in Spain and around the world, and the essence of flamenco music, along with new studio tracks and compositions.

Famed Chicago tenor master Fred Anderson will releaseSOUTHPORT'S FIRST DOUBLE CD this spring called "FRED", with Tatsu Aoki, Afifi Philard and special guest artist, Sparrow. Composer and flutistMichael Mason will release his new CD, "EXPLORATION" also this spring, dedicated to the memory of the late piano giant Kevin Gainer. George Freeman and Von Freeman are working on NEW CDs, Von's OPUS, "Walkin' Tuff!" was SOUTHPORT's first CD release back in 1989.

Label co-founder, vocalist and arranger Joanie Pallatto is continuing work on a new CD, a collection of original songs and new arrangements of eclectic material. Pallatto also taped two new songs for the Adam Langer 35mm film "THE BLANK PAGE". Sparrow composed the film score, with some guitar tracks played by NORTHPORT's Patrick Halliwell & Dan Strack. "The Blank Page", which includes songs by twenty area and international rock bands is slated for release as one of two SOUNDTRACK CDs for SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT 1997. Also scheduled for a soundtrack release is the Sparrow-penned filmscore to John Covert's "WAITING FOR THE MAN".

Ian Schneller's "FALSTAFF II" , recorded by Pat Halliwell, was selected as one of the top ten independent rock/pop CDs of the year by The Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot . Native American Indian poet/composer James Yellowbank and his new CD "It's Not The Singer, It's The Song" (another Halliwell production) received a great 3-STAR REVIEW from The Chicago Tribune's Lynn Van Matre!Dan Strack began work on a new CD with his group, "PASTED ON".

WHEN THE NEED BECOMES THE GREED~by b.p. sparrow

There used to be a time when new gadgets like stereos and VCRs came out once a year, the way modern cars are still released. These release seasons offered a logic to the way we purchased electronic "toys." Today as countless companies "dump" their new technology on the market, there is no release "season". Often the model number and color of a computer printer is all that is changed, mid-year (along with the price!) We have mastered the concept of buy today, throw away today, and often we never master that which we own, just how to use that automatic record logic, or brown both sides of the bread with that toaster oven. Things are produced so quickly that often the manufacturer will not have or stock parts- go ahead, make my day, buy a NEW one.

Just how many inventions and products are new? Every time you go to the grocery store they do not have a new form of head lettuce, do they? Modern inventions are like modern music- endless variations on similar themes.

Why does Duke Ellington sound like The Duke and why do Hondas look like Hondas? Instead of buying that $5,000 CD player, purchase several copies of each SOUTHPORT & NORTHPORT CD and give them to your friends!

For each recording is something new, rare and special, unhook the flood of mass produced products that show the greed, not the NEED.

*****SPARROW BEGS YOUR PARDON!!! In my commentary in issue 17, I took on the entire TV media, and for the most part I feel that their lack of support is a FACT. But as always within the negative there is the positive, and I wanted to mention CLTV in Chicago as a POSITIVE force in the presentation of local art and music, along with ABC & CNN- SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SOUND NEWSVOLUME XX 1997 APRIL SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT &

SPARROW, COMMENTARY AND CATALOG..............................................................

AFTERLIFE IN THE DIGITAL UNIVERSE by b. p. sparrow

With the invention and the ability to record sound music entered a new dimension. Like early film, screening audiences were amazed by the "magic" of light in a dark room, and as trains rolled into the audience they ran with fear. To hear voices like Caruso after they went to meet their maker was almost a religious experience. "Where does the voice come from if they are not there?" People in small towns, farmers, factory workers in cities all could experience the sound of a full orchestra, or the "evil" early swing and jazz forms. In the beginning the musicians union in this country thought that recorded music would make it impossible for musicians to make a living, they would be replaced by machines and mirrored images of time gone by. The union relented. Music poured into the airwaves, the turntables, the CD players, the music videos. Recording was called an art form.

We live in "strange" times. Many children have never seen a "live" musician. The corporate control of radio and TV restricts the "freedom of the new" and artists, composers find it hard, with so many grand systems of communication, to break through the maze of the mundane. Orchestral halls around the world are running empty. Jazz bands languish on off nights for pennies. Rock bands play in old movie theaters, four at a time for beer money. Angry teens take over empty factories, inhale drugs and listen to John Travolta disco with all of society their enemy as they MOSH in anger and ignorance. Boredom breeds elitism and open racism. Gangster rappers blast away in Vegas with a common entrance into their social nightmares. Technology has changed. Humanity has not.

And when the child looked up at the man, playing sax on the street corner and asked: "Mother, why is that man doing that", her mother waited for a moment and said: "So that he can eat."

SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT & SPARROW COMMENTARY AND CATALOG................

WHEN MUSIC BECOMES THE LIFE by b. p. sparrow

1997 was the banner year for the "little" independent film to take on the competition at the Academy Awards with both Sling Blade and Shine surfing past the HOLLYWOOD TYPE mega film, the way a band like THE BOX TOPS took on pop radio in the late 60s via Chicago with their #1 HIT MY BABY WROTE ME A LETTER.

SHINE was about a classical pianist that had a severe mental breakdown, left his music and made a return. It was based on the life of the LIVING pianist David Helfgott and his REAL mental problems and artistic triumphs. To make an amazing story short, Mr. Helfgott is touring the classical circuit now and selling out large concert halls around the world. The focus of the film has had a "ROCKY" like effect to his career.

The reviews of the real SHINE character Helfgott have been very BAD. The classical critics couldn't wait to sink their teeth into this artist. He is not the well-oiled technical machine that the conservatories have been turning out like POP TARTS for the last 50 years. Both The Chicago Tribune and The Chicago Sun-Times writers warned listeners about his "mistakes" and "limitations". Needless to say, his shows have been sold out in Chicago, the audience loves him, and HE IS PLAYING, something most of the critics can't, won't or shouldn't do. When music becomes life it sings a common melody. And sometimes the audience and the artist is RIGHT.

AND WHAT SHALL WE LISTEN TO? by b.p. sparrow

We all know the problem with computers. As soon as you learn a program, there is an update and everything changes. You must buy the upgrade, install it and re-learn what you already know. If not, you will be left in the dust without any technical support. Many moons ago if you wanted a RECORD, it cost $6.99 and you could play it on a turntable. There was a large picture of the artist, cool graphics and it worked. Things got scary with the old 8 track decks. We listened to The Doors in our 1979 GTOs and ran at 3 and 3/4 inches per second. It WORKED.

Then the infamous cassette, that Consumer magazine lists this year as an "inferior sound medium", took over planet earth. Now CDs, DATS, A-DATS, DVDs, minidiscs, harddiscs, softdiscs (a joke) and countless more. It seems that for each new invention there is a new form of consumer torture. And to this day the musician toils in the abstract realm of creation. Trying to figure out a way to reach an audience, while the equipment people tend to forget that without the ARTIST, there is only silence, be it digital or analog! Before you can "play it back" it has to EXIST.

SOUTHPORT AND NORTHPORT FESTIVAL FIVE-

AND IT IS LIVE!!! by b. p. sparrow

1998 marks the 5th year of our annual SOUTHPORT Festival. Once again this year our evening events will be at POPS FOR CHAMPAGNE, with an afternoon concert at the Cultural Center Cafe, and two in-store show locations at Borders Books & Music on Michigan Avenue, and Clark St. Many of us "record label honcho's" and "recording engineers" tend to forget that music is and will always be a "live" thing. Within the digital confines of this century we have found a way for sounds to live forever, but that is not real. Now I am not saying "don't buy recorded music", I think what I am getting at is to always get up off your analog bottom and see LIVE MUSIC. That is why we have the festival. The bar and the concert stage are the "source", the origins of the inspiration. See you at the record store, see you at the bar, see you at the concert hall. See you.

THE 5TH ANNUAL SOUTHPORT / NORTHPORT FESTIVAL 1998

SOUND NEWS VOLUME XXVII SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 1998

SOUTHPORT / NORTHPORT COMMENTARY - NEWS & CATALOG

WHEN THERE WAS A BAND... by Joanie Pallatto

I can remember a time, not so long ago, when I was in a BAND. My first BAND in high school never did have a gig, but we did have one rehearsal in my basement. My big number was "White Rabbit." Moving to Chicago in the blizzard of 1979, I soon met Sparrow and he asked me to join his BAND, then known as "Sparrow AM/FM." We had a steady gig at the Northbranch Saloon on Monday nights, and played fun gigs like the Lincoln Park Street Festival, Taste of Chicago and ChicagoFest. We recorded an LP, and we were on our way! Now, I can count many more CDs between us, and none of them are with a BAND. Seems like we moved away from that concept, and toward recorded excursions with various individual musicians... With the Chicago Jazz Festival approaching, I look forward to hearing musicians that have hung in there and are still a BAND. We attended a concert at Balmoral Park this summer and heard the Oak Ridge Boys. They have the same group of singers, and the same "sidemen" since the 60s that comprise their BAND. There is something very inspiring about that. It's good to welcome back our bass player from the old Northbranch days, John Magnan. We'll be performing as part of the Jazz Institute of Chicago's 1998 Jazz Club Tour on Wednesday, September 2nd at Fred Anderson's Velvet Lounge. Joining us are our new partners in music, George Freeman and Alejo Poveda, and The Sparrow Dancers! I can't wait. (There will also be many SOUTHPORT recording artists, "jamming" on the set- Michael Mason, Rob Ryndak, Tatsu Aoki, April Aloisio, Tomas de Utrera, Bruce Tate-- and Fred Anderson will be performing with his BAND.)

NEW RELEASE: APRIL ALOISIO "EASY TO LOVE"

With her third CD for SOUTHPORT, vocalist April Aloisio moves into new excursions

of Brazilian jazz, fresh re-workings of classic standards, and an easy-to-love recording.

With guitarists Dave Onderdonk & Fareed Haque, April's soprano voice soars on

Stevie Wonder's "Another Star." The other end of the musical spectrum unfolds with a

mesmerising duet, featuring tenor giant Von Freeman on "Night And Day." Through

these varied songs, there is a definite musical cohesion, one that April Aloisio has achieved

as a true artist with a personal vision.

Hear April Aloisio sing for these special CD Release Concert events. . .

Campos, a native of Costa Rica, and Ferguson, a native of Gadsden, Alabama represent a

new generation of classical musicians that are active as both performing artists and educators.

Included on their new CD is "Sonata For Clarinet And Piano", a piece that reflects the

traditional, neo-Romantic style of living 20th century Argentinian composer Carlos Guastavino.

SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT COMMENTARY & CATALOG

THE MILLENNIUM OF MEDIOCRITY by b. p. sparrow___________________________

Happy Holidays to all as we reach the end of 1998...time flies. This has been another busy year for Southport &

Northport Records and with this newsletter we offer 5 CDs. All of these projects reflect different views of life and music, it is like taking a peek into the mind and home of someone new. When we have a new release our great RADIO office sends out promo copies of the CD to various stations, along with a brief description called a "1-sheet" so that the busy program and music directors can decide on if they want to play the CD. We keep all verbal comments and information in a computer data base and print reports about the progress of the CD. Often we have real positive feedback and sometimes the brutality of a negative response makes us all amazed and sad. Since the NEA was taken over by Jesse Helms and funds were cut, many of the NPR stations are trying to give "the public" what they want. You get comments like, "Ella sang that song." or "Make shorter songs" or "We don't play anything that is new" or "we don't like vocals" or "the improvisation is too much!" It seems to many of us that Public Radio exists not as a diluted extension of commercial radio but as a conduit of creativity and THE NEW. The way it goes today, Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane and Betty Carter would all be run off the air, with the soft programming of stations afraid of their audience and the music. Thank God for the Few, the Proud and the Brave that take a chance, after all some program director, back in 1931 took a chance on a young man named Earl Hines.

SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT COMMENTARY & CATALOG

THE MILLENNIUM OF MEDIOCRITY by b. p. sparrow

Happy Holidays to all as we reach the end of 1998...time flies.

This has been another busy year for Southport & Northport Records and with

this newsletter we offer 5 CDs. All of these projects reflect different views of life

and music, it is like taking a peek into the mind and home of someone new. When

we have a new release our great RADIO office sends out promo copies of the CD

to various stations, along with a brief description called a "1-sheet" so that the busy

program and music directors can decide on if they want to play the CD. We keep

all verbal comments and information in a computer data base and print reports

about the progress of the CD. Often we have real positive feedback and sometimes

the brutality of a negative response makes us all amazed and sad. Since the NEA

was taken over by Jesse Helms and funds were cut, many of the NPR stations are

trying to give "the public" what they want. You get comments like, "Ella sang

that song." or "Make shorter songs" or "We don't play anything that is new" or

"we don't like vocals" or "the improvisation is too much!" It seems to many of us

that Public Radio exists not as a diluted extension of commercial radio but as a

conduit of creativity and THE NEW. The way it goes today, Eric Dolphy, John

Coltrane and Betty Carter would all be run off the air, with the soft programming

of stations afraid of their audience and the music. Thank God for the Few, the

Proud and the Brave that take a chance, after all some program director, back in

1931 took a chance on a young man named Earl Hines.

SOUND NEWS VOLUME XXIX JANUARY-FEBRUARY 1999

SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT COMMENTARY & CATALOG

A NEW YEAR... by Joanie Pallatto

So, what will the new year bring? I'm hoping for cover tunes by artists that will surprise and amaze the industry... like, Barbra Streisand singing "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad" (in case you forgot, that was a BIG hit by Meatloaf.) Or, just imagine Tom Jones belting out a fresh arrangement of "Mac Arthur Park". How about Stevie Wonder singing anything he damn well pleases??? Please! As for our own SOUTHPORT artists, I really hope Audrey Morris will decide to record "I Am Woman" (hear me roar!), and April Aloisio will screech out a steamy rockin' version of "Half Breed." My pick for Willie Pickens would be Jimmy Webb's immortal "Galveston", and I'll just bet that Corky McClerkin would tear it up on Webb's "Where's The Playground, Susie?" It is only fitting that we reserve the classic "Evergreen" for Von Freeman (as a bow to Ms. Streisand, of course), and George Freeman would feel right at home putting his spin on The Beatles "All You Need Is Love". Speaking of The Beatles, the possibilities are endless. "Helter Skelter" is a great choice for Famoudou Don Moye, in fact, the whole avant garde gang could join in-- Joseph Jarman, Tatsu Aoki, Sparrow, Damon Short, Paul Scea, Malachi Favors Maghostut, Fred Anderson, Afifi Phillard, Ari Brown, Francis Wong, Dave Pavkovic -- hell, let's getVon Freeman, Billy Brimfield, Michael Mason andMichael Raynor to join in, with Enoch Williamson offering the vocal text. (Actually, that's not such a bad idea...) Elijah Levi andRon Cooper could croon "Me And My Shadow" (smile), andEugenia Elliott, Christiana Moffa andLinda Tate would sound great on "We Are Family." Rob Ryndak should consider a solo version of "Crystal Blue Persuasion", while Dave Gordon may want to choose his favorite George Winston composition (any titles come to mind? anyone?) King Fleming has it hands down with "All Shook Up", but I really want to hear Bobby Lewis sing and play "Winchester Cathedral." Can't you just hear Dave Onderdonk and Mark Walker laying down their personal groove on "I Was Made To Love Her"? Let's not forget about the arranging skills of Marshall Vente- man, what he could do to "Mustang Sally" with Tropicale is mind-boggling. Don Bennett-- he's the man for "Up, Up And Away", while Dave Flippo already told me he's got dibs on "Say A Little Prayer." I've decided to commission Frank Portolese and Paulinho Garcia to transcribe a Ferrante & Teicher piano arrangement of their choice, of course. Ron Surace has refused to play something he hasn't written, but I think if we come up with the right vehicle, he'll reconsider. Maybe "Surfin Safari"... Tomas De Utrera and Scott Holman have been gracious to agree to a duet on "Am I Blue". I guess that leaves us with our classical duo of Wagner Campos & Roderick Ferguson-- I hope they want to do "God Bless The Child" as much as I want to hear them play it! I love all the tunes, but for this compilation I'd have to choose "Stand By Your Man". Please, music lovers, feel free to write, fax, call or e-mail your submissions to SOUTHPORT Records. I appreciate the feedback. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW

S-SSD 0057 GEORGE FREEMAN "GEORGE BURNS!"

Veteran guitarist George Freeman returns for his 2nd SOUTHPORT CD. Alternating his bluesy original tunes with great standards, George Freeman is a unique voice in the history of jazz guitar. With original tunes like "Hot Box", "And She Left Me", "Vonski", "Here's Bruz", and great standards like "Swinging Shepherd Blues", and "Satin Doll", George Freeman burns throughout the CD! With the great Eldee Young on bass, grunting and whooping it up in the background, rock-steady drummer Phil Thomas laying down a strong beat, and pianist Lou Gregory comping and soloing in perfect taste and groove, you'd think it couldn't get any better-- then enter Von Freeman swinging and boppin' on "Vonski"!!! Vocalist Ron Cooper was just waiting for a vehicle like "And She Left Me." But the real treat here is the one and only George Freeman-- George Burns!

SOUNDNEWS VOLUME XXX MARCH/APRIL/MAY 1999

SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT COMMENTARY/CATALOG & NEWS

A NIGHT IN THE LIFE by bradley parker-sparrow

Perhaps there is a pair of sunglasses for each neatly pressed business suit. The car ride home from Andy's paints a vivid print of Chicago, over the dark river at 3 am, past Wacker and a dive onto the southbound outer drive. Steve Cushing plays very old blues swing sides that lift the memory of a man who was a child with a horn back in time.

Let's get a burger at White Castle, no, it is too late and there is a large pot of beans resting on the porcelain stove at the bedpost-home. We slip into the Midway, past the U of C and souls of tenants replaced by the giant ice skating ring, is this 55th Street? And the cold dark Fermi statue on Cottage Grove gently glares granite.

Take a left, the Leather Lounge is closed, with its airline size bottles of whiskey like African soldiers on a plexi- glass 3" shelf. Turn left. A light kiss on the cheek and the man moves from the Chevy toward the porch. George is at home listing to a CD and playing his guitar. Enter the flat and toss the horn in the corner by the door, the money on the kitchen table. The phone rings and the man says "Vonski." A night in the life of one of the world's greatest tenor men, VON FREEMAN.

THE NEW MUSIC OF SOUTHPORT by bradley parker-sparrow

It makes sense that The 6th Annual Southport Festival 1999 has its focus on "The New Music of Southport."

Our main concert, sponsored by Sanyo-Verbatim and The City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs on Friday, June 11, 12:15pm in the glorious Preston Bradley Hall at Chicago Cultural Center will feature 10 ensembles, ALL from Chicago, ALL forms of music and ALL New Music. In a world saturated with re-do's like The Mummy, Star Wars, The Saint and Jazz Repertory Ensembles, it seems that we are stuck in time for that which is convenient, easy and predictable. It seems that looking backwards requires NO imagination. Three new CDs will be released at this years FEST, with CD #5 by Southport veteran Bobby Lewis and new CDs by vocalist Libby York and sax man Mark Fechner-ALL events within the week of concerts at Pops for Champagne, our nightclub sponsor with the help of Perrier Jouet Champagne.

I take this moment to thank all of our artists and sponsors for helping create a unique Chicago event. For each new CD is a mirror of the music that surrounds, a living digital document of our music, our city and time. See you at the FEST!

SOUTHPORT IS CHICAGO

As we enter the new year we hope that the street signs won't go backwards. SOUTHPORT is not a very long street. It runs from Clybourn to Clark. Or, the steel mill to the White Hen. SOUTHPORT Records started out as Sparrow Sound Design Recording Studio and Record Label in 1977. Then, SOUTHPORT was born. Remember? Where were you? Let us know... We remember you... SOUTHPORT will see you at The Chicago Jazz Festival. We will be there. You will be there.

As cities around the world add THEIR Jazz Festivals, Chicago people can sit back and be proud that we have had so many years of CHICAGO JAZZ FESTIVALS, and that they are free. Despite the political climate of the city,

with the hard work of The Jazz Institute of Chicago and its tireless staff of jazz lovers, the Fest is and it will be. From the hard core traditional to the hard core avant, the mix is part of the blessing. We all need to be taken by the ears so that our minds will be open to new, and sometimes old things. This year at the FEST 99 many SOUTHPORT artists will be on BOTH of the Festival stages, as leaders and side people. George Freeman, Von Freeman, Bobby Lewis, Joanie Pallatto, Willie Pickens... When you see these cats, clap your hands and feel proud.

***URGENT MEMO!!!! 20 years ago, before the invention of the CHAIN store, you had to be a detective to find SOUTHPORT CDs. We would deliver albums from the trunk of a '66 Cutlass, direct to Ma and Pa stores. As always, if you don't see a SOUTHPORT CD in ANY store, order it. And you can always call the office at 773-281-8510 and get it from the source, SOUTHPORT on SOUTHPORT.

SOUNDNEWS VOLUME XXXIII NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 1999

SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT/SPARROW COMMENTARY/NEW RELEASES & NEWS

PRELUDE TO A NEW MILLENNIUM by b. p. sparrow

As the fall winds pull away at the trees and the Chicago cold that we all know returns, this century, #20 winds down like the motor on a '66 GTO. There was a time when people communicated with a system called the Morse code.

Today we communicate with millions of complex digital pulses and they have become the Code of sound and time.

Writers would spend their lives with pen in hand and typewriters, and now Microsoft controls the distribution of data for the business and the art world, and MAC has been saved by offering brightly colored computers without floppy drives, for they are an accessory. Rappers pray to the Yamaha drum machine and torture any romantic knowledge of love and sex. American rockers sound British, British rockers sound American. Modern composers toil away in the obscurity of invention, as Philip Glass continues to conquer the earth. The GREAT thing about all this invention and the new century is that science and information has trickled down to us mere mortals. By the mass duplication of technology it has opened an amazing amount of information to the so called common man or woman, the small record label, the small business, or in Ron Reagan's words, "the backbone of America."

FIVE NEW CD RELEASES TO END THE CENTURY!

GEORGE FLYNN "TRINITY" - KANAL/WOUND/SALVAGE - A DOUBLE CD! S-SSD-5001-2

Chicago composer and pianist George Flynn begins "The Southport Composer Series" with an epic, double solo piano CD,"Trinity." Disc 1 contains the re-release of the Atlantic vinyl LPs of piano selections Kanal and Wound. Disc 2, completes the "Trinity" opus with the newly recorded "Salvage" (at Sparrow Sound Design.) This can be considered a life work, tracing the music, art and life of Mr. Flynn. Please join the artists in concert and celebration on Monday, Nov. 8th, at 12:15 at Chicago Cultural Center-Preston Bradley Hall for a world release event. Flynn will play a selection from "Trinity", and also offer selections from another piano composition, "Pieces Of Night," featuring Gregory Hamilton and Paul Failla on piano. The taped musical compositions of Ilhan Mimaroglu will also be included in the concert. Admission is FREE. 78 East Washington, 2nd floor. 312-744-6630.

FRANCESCO CROSARA / VON FREEMAN "COLORS" S-SSD 0069 Pianist, arranger and composer Francesco Crosara makes his Southport debut with "Colors." A native of Italy, Crosara grew up in a household and world full of music. His mother, Lilian Terry is known the world over as a jazz singer. Joining Crosara on this project that was taped in Chicago and Hawaii is Southport/Chicago Veteran Von Freeman. The CD is a blend of originals and standards and a mix of sound forms. Come and celebrate the CD releases of "Colors" on Friday, Nov. 12, 1999 at Pops For Champagne. The entire "Colors" ensemble will be on hand with Von to concertize and "party-ski." Pops is located at 2934 N. Sheffield, in Chicago 773-472-1000, music begins at 9pm.

PHIL KIDDER "SIMPLE PLEASURES" S-SSD 0066 The newest addition to Southport's impressive stable of jazz vocalists is Phil Kidder. The new CD, "Simple Pleasures" is a collection of standards that feature the intimate setting of guitar and vocal duets, with the guitar chores being shared by John Paris and Dave Onderdonk. Phil possesses a light and moody voice, and the chamber like air of the CD is refreshing. On Friday, November 19th, 1999 join Mr. Kidder and his ensemble at Rumors, one of Chicago's newest music rooms, at 4500 N. Lincoln. The music and celebration begins at 8:30, with a champagne toast and treats! 773-271-9944. There is no cover charge.

SOUND NEWS VOLUME XXXIV SPRING 2000 SOUTHPORT/

NORTHPORT/SPARROW COMMENTARY/NEW RELEASES & NEWS

THE NEW MUSIC OF SOUTHPORT by b. p. sparrow & j. pallatto

Within the deep cold of another Chicago winter, Southport/Northport burned the analog and digital oil to create new music projects that span the human spectrum. January marked the debut and early release of the new"Southport Composers Series" Double CD"Trinity" (01) by Chicago composer/pianist George Flynn. The massive solo piano epic spans the Viet Nam years to the present, featuring a release of several tracks that were once on the famed Atlantic/Finnadar label. Composer/arranger and flutistMichael Mason offers his 5th Southport CD "Angels Of Fire." (75) This original musical and life biographical epic was produced in part by the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance to be used as both an educational and musical fund-raiser for the organization. In continuation of"The Southport Cabaret Series" Chicago vocalistMarie Michuda released "It's A Grand Night For Singing," premiering her newly recorded repertoire at her December 1999 concert recital.

The backbone of new American music can be found in the logic of small independent labels. To this day, major labels continue to recycle that which is safe and done before. The focus of SOUTHPORT this year will be THE NEW, and with this spring we offer a quartet of new music projects. Along with Flynn's "Trinity" and Mason's "Angels Of Fire", March brings the early release of Tatsu Aoki's "The Miyumi Project" (78), featuring Mwata Bowden. Named after one of Tatsu's daughters, "Miyumi" is a melodic-percussive epic that features both Asian and African percussion forms with a focus on ancient and new forms of percussion from Japan/Korea/Africa and the world. In essence, World Music from Chicago. "The Miyumi Project" CD Release Party was a huge success on Friday, March 10th atHot House, performing to a sold-out house. The Paulinho Garcia Trio also performed.

To round out our Spring 2000 release schedule March will bring the world wide release of "Albert's Lullaby." (77) This project was conceived of by bassist/composer Mike Staron, and is a tribute to the music of Albert Ayler. This recording features one of the last studio recorded performances of Chicago great Hal Russell. Recorded back in the early 90s Russell and Staron appear with Rick Shandling and Sparrow. Wednesday, June 21, 2000 will be a special tribute date to Hal, as part of the SOUTHPORT Festival, with special guests including Rich Fudoli at POPS!

CD'S FROM SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT ON THE EVER EMINENT HORIZON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guitarist/Composer Frank Portolese has completed his new CD "Last Call" (72), look for a May release date.

Martha will be featured in the June Southport Festival at Pops. Guitarist Dan McIntyre has finished his Southport debut CD "Hourglass" (76), another May release. Southport/Northport veteran bassist/composerJohn Magnan is mastering his new epic"50/50." SOUNDNEWS VOLUMEXXXV JUNE SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT/

SPARROW COMMENTARY/NEW RELEASE & NEWS + FESTIVAL 7!

A FESTIVAL OF FESTIVALS! SOUTHPORT FESTIVAL by b. p. sparrow

The Greeks,

lived a long time ago, and some of the first books on art and music still exist. Plato said that art was for relaxation, or like singing songs by the fire when you are a CUB scout, or fishing. This past April, my dad passed on, and he was the type of guy who never had time for art. With 4 kids, and no education, he worked all the time. He did like Nat King Cole and Jackie Gleason, Red Skelton and Sammy Davis Jr., but they were on the TV, the radio. As time moved on he did understand that I was a piano player and stuff, and one time he put one of my CDs on, at the farm in Plum Branch, South Carolina, on his own (the chickens were quiet!). This year's Festival is dedicated to my dad, William T. Parker, 1922-2000.

It is time to rest up for the SOUTHPORT FESTIVAL-7. Get away from the computer, TV, any form of work and check out the artists that make the label run. Live music existed long before recorded music, and this year we are all over the city (see the full schedule on the back of this newsletter). Once again we would like to thank all of the artists that are providing the sounds and the CDs. Our Fest sponsors this year include: Sanyo-Verbatim, WBEE, Pops For Champagne, The City Of Chicago, The MCA, Whirlwind and The Jazz Record Mart. Remember that The 7th Annual SOUTHPORT FESTIVAL runs Monday, June 19-Saturday June 24, with live music each night at Pops For Champagne.

THREE CDs will be released at this years FEST-7, with the CD release party of Chicago singer/actress Alexandra Billings. Her Southport debut CD "Being Alive" is on fire with a strength that is ripe with energy and emotion.

The songs come from many musical fields, cabaret-pop-swing. To see Ms. Billings perform is a profound experience, for her live shows mix her music with comedy, drama and raw intensity. Alexandra's CD party kicks off opening night of FEST 7 at POPS at 8:30PM on Monday, June 19th.

CD-2: HAL RUSSELL / MIKE STARON "ALBERT'S LULLABY". I did not actually meet Hal Russell until about 2 years before he moved on to jazz heaven. Stories about his life, art and sound spread through Chicago and the world like a South Chicago summer breeze. Russell is considered one of the main Chicago players of this century as he moved beyond anything known as a "standard," his life was an elliptical experiment in sound. At Pops on Wednesday, June 21 at 8:30PM, we will celebrate the posthumous release of "Albert's Lullaby", (produced by Mike Staron) and including Chicago great Rich Fudoli for a tribute to the man and his music.

CD-3: MARTHA LORIN "COME WALK WITH ME" The main focus of Southport Records has been music from Chicago, and Southport welcomes the New York based jazz vocalist/composer Martha Lorin as she samples many of our Chicago musical treasures, recording her new CD in Chicago with Chicago cats. Martha's voice is a lush alto that moves through many musical forms. Von Freeman/Fareed Haque/Johnny Frigo are just some of the Chicago folks on this Southport recording, along with Vancouver pianist/arranger Miles Black. Ms. Lorin's CD party will be at POPS on Friday June 21 at 9:00PM, perhaps the show of the year!

SOUTHPORT NEWS BITES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT/SPARROW COMMENTARY & NEW RELEASE NEWS

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? by b. p. sparrow

The taxi boat lifts past the blue-grey waves and drops us off in the center of Venice. The day before waves crashed up into the giant San Marco square and we have to take our shoes off and dodge the massive tourist army wading through the water to find our modest 200 year hotel. Down the lonely alley-like street at the corner is a McDonalds! In a land of pasta and pizza, regional wine and family secrets, the corporate arm of the world pushes aside tradition with the blandness of our gastral mediocrity. The next time you are in a CD store, (one of the giant chain linked chains) notice the wealth of re-issued material, especialy jazz. It is as if Bud Powell, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane never died as large corporate labels scrape the bottom of the musical barrel to satisify our lust and longing for "The Night Of The Living Dead," or the reissue. It takes a giant to trace what corporation bought the long negotiated rights for these masters, and most times the artist's estates, if they exist, never see a penny. The next time you purchase a CD, think of the living and the dreams of the active, and do not support our fast food reissue massive corporations as they make a profit on the dead. Paraphrasing the great Orson Welles, "They will really love me when I am dead!.."

*THREE NEW SOUTHPORT CDS THAT SPAN TIME AND MUSIC!

#1: LINDA TATE

"Time, Seasons and the Moon is one of the better albums made in Chicago this year..."

-Neil Tesser, The Reader

Chicago vocalist Linda Tate releases her 2nd Southport CD, "Time, Seasons and the Moon" (S-SSD-0081). Joining Linda is stellar cast of Chicago's finest musicians, with Johnny Frigo, Rich Fudoli, Bradley Williams, Curtis Robinson, John Whitfield, Jim Cox, Greg Sergo, Steve Eisen, Sparrow, Bobby Schiff, Phil Gratteau, Kathy Kelly, Heitor Garcia and Paulinho Garcia. Linda weaves many sound forms in a tribute to time and life's seasons. Her recent CD party on a Saturday afternoon at Andy's drew a PACKED house as members of her ensemble played CD selections.

#2: JOANIE PALLATTO AND KING FLEMING

"14 songs of pure magic and entertainment by two of the best jazz artists in the world recording today! THE KING AND I is destined for classic status."

-Lee Prosser, The Jazz Review

Label co-founder and producer/vocalist/lyricist Joanie Pallatto returns with pianist/composer King Fleming in their new CD "The King And I" (S-SSD-0084). King Fleming, known as the "West Side King", because of his famed big band was active on the famous Chess/Argo label in the late 50's with several sides as a leader. King's style of composition (the CD has 10 originals) spans the history of song for the last half of this century...he lived the song. Joanie Pallatto delivers her 7th CD as a leader/vocalist and also contributes lyrics to 5 songs. With liner notes by Rick Kogan (Chicago Tribune and WGN Radio), and musical contributions by Von Freeman on tenor sax, Bobby Lewis on flugelhorn and trumpet, and Rich Fudoli on flute and soprano sax, the CD is anchored by the veteran King Fleming rhythm section of Clifford Griffin on bass and Bill Cochran on drums.

#3: MAX ZBIRAL-TELLER

"the Jimmy Hendrix of the Hammered Dulcimer..."

-neighborhood friends of Max

Southport Records is proud to welcome Max Zbiral-Teller "Too Heavy To Carry" (S-SSD-0083) to it's roster of new music artists from Chicago. Max plays the Hammered Dulcimer, and as a Junior in High School has become the youngest member of the Southport family at age 16! Please join us for a CD release party at the famed Abbey Pub & Restaurant, 3420 W. Grace (at Elston), 773-478-4408 on Sunday, Dec. 3rd from 6:30 to 9:30. Joining Max on this CD (and at the party!) is Kat Eggleston on Acoustic Guitar and his childhood friend Isaac Alderson on Uilleann Pipes and the traditional Irish Flute. Many musical friends of MAX will stop by for an informal jam session and the event is FREE to the public!

"Too Heavy To Carry" traces the foundation of Celtic music, blending the traditional music of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and Breton along with the maritime provinces of Canada and Galicia forms from Spain. The essence of "folk" music is to extend traditions that span centuries, creating new forms. The intense, yet beautiful wall of sound created by the percussive Hammered Dulcimer becomes a symphony of melody and new tradition with the youthful dexterity and vision of Max Zbiral-Teller.

SOUNDNEWS VOLUMEXXXV JUNE SOUTHPORT/NORTHPORT/

SOUTHPORT NEWS BITES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

REMEMBER TO CHECK OUT OUR WEB SITE. Pete "Petey" Jacobs has been busy burning the digital candle oil with a new LOOK for our WEB SITE, www.chicagosound.com. Guitarists Dan McIntyre and Frank Portolese had GREAT CD release parties at POPS-Chicago and POPS-Highwood. Our Virgin Megastore in-store shows were a SMASH, with the help of Virgin's Chris Morgan and our A&R person, Hillary Bryan. We have advance copies for sale of Bobby Lewis's new epic "In The Forefront", a double CD of sessions from the famed Universal Recording Studios plus more, Murray Allen-engineer, and MANY horns! Look for a trumpet party real soon! Vocalist Linda Tate will have a late summer release of her 2nd Southport CD, "Time, Seasons and the Moon." Composer/Pianist Rob Ryndak's 3rd CD "Stay with It" will be out SOON! Special "hats off" to producer Ralph Lampkin, for great production on CDs by Martha Lorin and Alexandra Billings. SEE YOU AT FEST 7!!!!!!!!!!!

Soundnews 86 Update: 6/4/2020

During these troubled times we have used music and words as a type of medicine. First the virus and then civic unrest beneath the shadows of George Floyd. As a half black and half white man I have skipped into the social river of life. The gangs on the South Side in Woodlawn of my youth. The smell of fire with the riots of 1968 as many black businesses burned to the ground creating the wasteland that we can not look at. On the Southport cover page you see a picture of George Freeman, proud and lean at "his" home. For what I have seen in 65 years is but a shadow of
what George and all the Freeman's have seen.

40 years ago I was standing at a bar in Chicago on Lincoln Ave. The door flew open and two large white men came up to me and said. "Come with us." I said: "Who are you?" The man on the left pulled his tight jacket back and it had an holstered gun. "We ask the questions." It was dark and raining as the plain clothed police put me in the back seat of their police issue Chevy. We went west on Cortland Ave. and then past the Chicago river. I said... "Officer where are we going?" They said, shut up or you will end up over there, pointing (in the river) and no one will know it... or... why. They pulled up to a white frame house and a young white woman was on the stairs, her head bent over. The cop said... "Come here and look at this boy... is it him?" She shifted down the steep stairs and looked at me. "No, that is not him... he was blacker..."

Silence as we drove away back to the bar on Lincoln. "Get out." I did not go back in the bar.

The Walking Distance

Do I have a 6' 2x4 to keep the sweating, heathing large man away from me while jogging on the sidewalk by Whole Foods? Will he guide his healthy body away from me, or ignore me because I am a large, bald ancient black man? Does he know that I am from the arts and streets, a musician/composer or am I just another black man stranded from the L train on the perfect North Side of Chicago. What is the walking distance? Is the virus a large George Orwell strainer that filters out the chosen perfect? So many years since 1984, or 2001, or 911 as the earth, like a giant forest fire clears away the trees?

What is the Walking Distance?

October 30, 1959, Episode 5, "The Walking Distance"

- the first year of The Twilight Zone.

"Martin Sloan, age thirty-six. Occupation: vice-president, ad agency, in charge of media. This is not just a Sunday drive for Martin Sloan. He perhaps doesn't know it at the time, but it's an exodus. Somewhere up the road he's looking for sanity. And somewhere up the road, he'll find something else." Opening narration, Rod Serling. Original score, Bernard Herrman.

Sparrow, born 1954, from 47th and Drexel, Chicago, moved to the "pocket" on 70th and Woodlawn at age 6. Can I go back in time to "The Little Store" that sold butter cookies from a plastic container for 1 cents, like the penny candy? Would the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Fain be there in their 1959 purple Buick? Would young Blackstone Rangers be trying to force me in their gang so that I could fight the west side Disciples? Could I hear the sound of the Illinois Central electric train, next to the Oakwoods Cemetery by the secret path and the sounds of tall, cheap cottonwood trees bending in the wind. And like that back in time episode of the Twilight Zone, when I got back in time, would I see myself as a child, my parents and my relatives as the sun sets next to "Daddy Harry's" chrome barbeque grill and taste Harry's secret barbeque sauce as his wife "Grandma Brown" smoked Kool cigarettes?

What is the walking distance? Gig Young plays the ad executive that goes back in time.

If you look closely you will spot Ron Howard from The Andy Griffith show in this episode as the Wilcox boy... Ronny and I were both born in 1954. I wished at age 5 that my father was really more like Andy Griffith.

Unsound Perforations.

How many times have you tried to tear off a payment section from a bill and the quick tear perforations are so close and weak toward the fold of the bill that you have to stop. You say to yourself, "I will destroy this bill if I am not patient." Then you go into very slow hand motion and try to define the perforations with smooth even strokes. Oh no, your new crease increases more perforation confusion. You lose patience and try to go for it. Then, and only then do you destroy the stub.

# # #

Toilet Paper, Tortillas and Joggers

Mother nature is complex. The way we treat our world, as humans is a mess. Pollution,

damage to all rain forests. The use of fossil fuels. And now Covid 19. Did the people

that hoarded all the toilet paper also buy all the fresh tortillas? Did they stuff the tortillas with chorizo and lard and then need all the toilet paper in the world? A rare site these days is a whole wheat tortilla! As far as staying away from people 6 feet while outside, what about joggers on the sidewalk...massive, breathing, sweating and coming right at you like a vulture. Are they eating all of the tortillas and using all the toilet paper?

John Prine

See the smoke from that brown mountain,

Lost in anxious hill, you will find. John Prine.

Early 70s joints on Lincoln Ave, beer/bourbon/guitar in hand,

Place a dollar in the pickle tip jar

For a young John Prine at the Plug Nickel, The Earl Of Old Town

Guitar in hand.

Folk of the folk bending notes...

beer/bourbon/guitar in hand,

A young John Prine.

So dark the hair and eyes that shoot right through you,

The melodic view, a southern northern stew

Of working class and dancing fast.

So young the man from Maywood, Illinois

This is his time.

John Prine (RIP)

Southport CD Projects in the works... Art marches on!!!!!!

George Flynn "Duo Diorama" (S-SSD 0149)

performs music by George Flynn and Winston Choi

MingHuan Xu, violin and Winston Choi, piano

Composer/Pianist/Producer Flynn returns with his 13th CD project from the Southport Composers Series, "Duo Diorama."

This CD includes three works performed by Duo Diorama (violinist MingHuan Xu and pianist Winston Choi). Those works are: Flynn's Seeking Serenity, Winston Choi’s Tetrachromatic Musings and Flynn's Meditative Fantasy. A fourth piece

on the CD is Flynn's piano solo American Icon, performed by Winston Choi.

Recorded live on September, 2018 and May, 2019 as part of the Chicago Soundings Concert Series at Queen Of Angels Church in Chicago by engineers Carl Beitler and Todd A. Carter on the 9' Steinway concert grand.

George Flynn (b. 1937) has performed and organized concerts of new music in a variety of New York City and Chicago venues. Many of Flynn's works reflect extra-musical interests, including images of this country and the Vietnam experience. His chamber duos consider human relationships, and several piano solos seek to extend the limits of gestural, technical and poetic elements.

The Boston Globe called Flynn's 2011 Tanglewood performance of his "Pieces of Night" "a furiously virtuosic, brilliantly chiseled 50-minute monument to Vietnam-era insomnia, turbulence both historic and timely."

Joanie Pallatto "My Original Plan" (S-SSD 0150)

"Joanie's engaging warmth, easy precision and sweet sense of rhythm..."

Howard Mandel - journalist, author and jazz critic

Singer/Songwriter and label co-owner Joanie Pallatto returns to the Southport Records catalog with her brand new creation "My Original Plan."

"My Original Plan" will be Joanie Pallatto's third recording of all original songs! Master Guitarist Fareed Haque will add the credit of Music Producer to this project.Pallatto and Haque continue to fine-tune the arrangements and production. Haque is featured on "As You Spend Your Life" (Southport 2011) and "It's Not Easy" (Southport 2008).

"My Original Plan" features the Southport session rhythm section of Fareed Haque on guitar, John Devlin on electric bass and Luiz Ewerling on drums. Together, they tracked 14 new original songs in 3 session days, engineered by Todd A. Carter (TV POW) and Sparrow, her partner in sound and life. On select tracks, Harp Master Howard Levy is along for the ride, plus creations from pianist/composer Bradley Parker-Sparrow. Sessions were tracked at Sparrow Sound Design (The Library) in the winter of 2019 (December 6, 7 & 8). JP wrote all the songs (music and lyrics) with a couple of cuts co-composed by Sparrow.

Joanie Pallatto has performed over the years at Pangea and The Iridium in New York City, City Winery, The Green Mill, Andy's, and Katerina's in Chicago and at The Chicago Jazz Festival in 2019. This is her third CD of all original music, and she has released a total of 15 recordings, including CDs with Bradley Parker-Sparrow.

Since we are all stuck at home/studio now... JP is polishing the creation! Lock-ins, keep your digital eyes open for the CD's first video "Do Butterflies Cry."

Due out, as soon as we can finish the mix!

Josie Falbo "You Must Believe In Spring" (S-SSD 0151)

Chicago Writer and WGN-AM host Rick Kogan says of Josie Falbo: "Stunning...astonishing...a revelation"

Following Chicago vocalist Josie Falbo's first Southport CD "Taylor Street" (Southport 2010) she returns with a new opus, "You Must Believe In Spring." You'll hear new recordings of classic material from The Great American Songbook, including Billy Strayhorn's "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing", Harold Arlen/Truman Capote's mesmerizing "A Sleepin' Bee" and the title track, "You Must Believe In Spring" where Falbo soars with complete authenticity (Michel Legrand/Jacques Demy/Marilyn & Alan Bergman).

Arranger and Co-Producer Carey Deadman arranged and conducted tracks for an 18-piece string orchestra, and multi horns to splendid effect! Veteran Jim Massoth is the main recording and mixing engineer at Crystall Recorders, and he swings the tenor sax solo on "Just You, Just Me." Musicians include Jeremy Kahn on piano, Mark Colby, Jim Gailloreto, Dave Onderdonk, Mike Smith, Ernie Denov, Andy Baker, Roger Ingram, and Rob Parton.

Josie is a true Italian American soprano that works in many forms of music- jazz, pop, R&B and classical. Signed to Vee-Jay Records in 1963, she released a '45 "Leave Me Alone/Easy To Love" which was an early catalyst for her life in music and recording. Over the years you have heard her sing on countless radio and TV commercials, including McDonalds, United Airlines, Sara Lee, Green Giant... the list goes on and on. Josie Falbo has also been featured in conductor and singer Bob Bowker's critically acclaimed "Lakeside Singers", touring the Chicago area with concerts.

THE THING! (1951/1982/2011)

James Arness plays "The Thing" in the 1951 version of this RKO film. Fame came to Arness when he landed the role of Marshal Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke. The black and white horror movie was directed by Christian Nyby. John Carpenter directed the 2nd version in 1982 starring Kurt Russell as a helicopter pilot. JP and I actually saw this outside of Cincinnati, Ohio at a shopping mall complex... it was a very bloody epic with a walking head with it's own legs!

The third version of "The Thing" I had not heard of (2011) was directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. It came on late night cable and was actually pretty good. In that film one of the lead actors barked to the group: "This is a monster, a virus! And what do you do when there is a virus?" Her fellow actor answered: "Quarantine! We can't let it get out into the world, it is the only way."

And sadly that is the way of the world with the new Covid 19 virus, or The Thing is what they called it in Hollywood... as we quarantine.... away, from "The Thing."
